I wanted to pay some respects to a place where I called hacking home a the start and still frequently use.
Training the Hacker Underground
At first I was a little wary of using the site and felt even worse about signing up for a forum account, however this shift in career paths was always going to be about taking new steps into the unknown so I jumped right in. The forum had a ton of information on it, and for a while I filled my boots with older tutorials. I started doing some Basic hacking missions and it was going pretty well considering I had never been trained.
So far I’ve managed the above solves in the site so far. I’ve tried many different sites for these types of legal challenges, however, I recommend HTS challenges to anyone looking to test their skills at any time. The realistic missions are all live sites hosted on the HTS server.
I’ve been a little distracted of late with my head in the books and doing Capture the Flag comps, however, I still pop into the forum and help out as much as I can. I never thought I’d ever hear myself say that I’ve been helping out on a hacking forum, but there you go.
The site is scheduled for an overhaul soon, so there should be some great stuff coming if what I’m hearing is true.
If Web Application testing is your thing, you could do a lot worse than to check out the missions on HTS.
I’d like to say thanks to some of the people on the forum and irc #ctf room.
